I only have a few data points (Glasgow, Amsterdam, several hotels in Italy, and now Zurich), but evidence suggests that "continental breakfast buffet" means something entirely different in Europe than it does in the U.S.
That coffee is
schwarzer Kaffee. It just features a head of foam.
